Leading his team for the win with his powerful butterfly stroke in the third leg of the 4×100-metre medley relay last Saturday night, Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time.
With a total of 22 medals, 18 of them gold, Phelps was crowned by FINA as The Greatest Athlete of All Time. Having accomplished everything Phelps set out to do at the beginning of his swimming career, it is now time to hang up his trunks and move on.
“To be able to sit here and say I’ve done everything I ever wanted to do in swimming is pretty special. That’s the only thing I wanted to say when I retired. I wouldn’t change anything, I didn’t miss anything, I’ve had the opportunity to do things that nobody else has ever done before. I’m pretty happy with that.”
