Fitmark Ambassador, Robin Romero, talks about gymnastics and learning to fly.
That’s my favorite line from my favorite movie – Nadia. It was a made-for-television movie that came out in 1984 when I was an energetic 4 year old girl – petite in stature, huge in dreams. It tells the story of Nadia Comaneci – the first Olympian ever to score a perfect 10 in gymnastics. I was completely intrigued seeing the girls in the movie flipping around, swinging, balancing, and flying. I had to do it. Period. Even at 4 years old, I was able to recognize the importance of having a dream to chase.
Much to my dismay, gymnastics was a lot harder than the girls in the movie made it look. I couldn’t pull myself up on the bars, or run fast enough to sail over the vault, or have the coordination to leap off the ground, flip my body over and land safely, yet. Still I remained focused on the possibility for a little girl to fly. I just needed some practice. Wherever there was an open lawn, I saw a 40 x 40 floor to practice my floor routine skills, park benches were balance beams. The school playground was my training camp. My youth was spent in pursuit of my beliefs that little girls can fly.
Eventually I transitioned into Acrobatic Gymnastics – picture Cirque du Soliel as a competitive sport. I was excited to find another way of pursuing my dream to fly. I retired as a competitive acrobat after winning my second national title. Even after achieving success in that sport, I was hungry for more. Yes – I achieved my dream of flying, but that doesn’t mean I stopped dreaming. I’ve since transitioned into weight lifting and have competed in NPC bikini competitions. In the 2013 competition season I will make my debut in Fitness. After 29 years I continue to chase my dreams of flying!
The drive that I learned from that movie as a child has never left me. I am thankful for the sport of gymnastics for instilling in me a sense of pride for being a strong woman and for teaching me how to fly. This is the same reason being involved in the fitness community is a passion of mine – it encourages women to take pride in strong healthy bodies. Women can be strong, and little girls can fly. Just watch me!
