Fitmark Ambassador, Elisabeth Zulkosky, talks about listening to inspiration
Have you ever had that little silent voice inside of you saying, “Keep going, don’t give up, one more?” This little voice even though it is silent, is always present in our minds…the word, Determination. No matter who you are or where you come from, everyone has this drive in them. This makes us all connected, you just need to find it.
When I first started preparing for my first competition, it was a life-long goal. This goal sat in the back of my mind, only surfacing when I would page through magazines, wishing that I had the confidence and grace the models projected in those images. It wasn’t until I met a figure competitor at the gym, that I gained the direction I needed. Little did I know at the time, she would become one of my closest friends. We started talking about competing and she told me if I ever wanted to take my physique further, she would help. That was it. I was determined to accomplish this goal, the one that kept burning in my mind and heart. For so long I was scared to act, but not anymore. I believe many people want to become healthier, they just don’t know where to start. They have the determination deep inside, but lack the knowledge. Once they have it, they are in control of their own destiny. Presented with the facts, some will run from the challenge, going the path of least resistance. Still, others will embrace it and prepare themselves for the task of not only changing their body, but their mind as well.
There were many times during my 3 month contest prep where I wanted to give up. However, those words kept coming to my mind….”push it, one more, you got this, prove it”. I kept going, through the pain and frustration. I wanted to prove to those around me I had what it takes to step on stage and present a physique many would look at as unattainable. Even though people would look at me and ask why? Telling me “be realistic, it’s your first show”. I just kept thinking, Really?? So what if it is my first show, I expect to be first. I will do whatever it takes.
It was the best feeling to walk on stage and be judged against the other competitors, never once did I move from first place. My life-goal was accomplished. I went from feeling like “maybe I could” to “I did it!” I had that confidence, that look; the one I once dreamed about. I had proved those wrong that didn’t believe and all I can hope is that I gave them some inspiration to understand that if you set your mind on anything, to let your determination show itself, you can do it. You CAN change. If it wasn’t for those silent words telling me to keep going, I wouldn’t be as happy as I am today. So let it shine and listen to what it has to say.
