Fitmark Ambassador Laura Woods talks about being a positive role model
When is the last time you did something for yourself? Being a mother and full-time working professional, it is hard to find the time to put fitness and a healthy lifestyle in the forefront. Not only that, but there are always those individuals that make you feel bad about spending this time on yourself. As a working mom of two young boys and a full-time attorney let me tell you: Never let anyone make you feel bad about putting your goals and your health as a priority in your life.
Oftentimes people will make negative comments about a goal that they do not understand, but do not let that change your mind. If your goal is like mine – training for a figure show – there is organization, preparation, hard work and dedication that go into every single step along the way. Similar things are required for every goal that someone sets, whether it is to run a 5k, set a personal record for squatting, get a promotion at their job, or lose 25 pounds.
While each goal has a different ending, similar steps are required to reach that ultimate goal. As a mother, do not let anyone convince you that spending time on your body and your health is taking time away from your children. I do not think that there is any better lesson for your children then them seeing you set a goal, work towards it, and ultimately achieve it in the end.
As parents, we have the incredible responsibility of shaping the lives of our children. Through goal-setting, we teach our children what it is like to be dedicated to something. We also teach them perseverance. We teach them that although there will be trials and tribulations in reaching your goal, that dedication and perseverance will always be rewarded in the end. I think that it is extremely important to teach your child that it is truly not about winning, or being better than the next person, but that it is being a better version of yourself in the end.
So to all you fit moms out there – good for you! You are teaching your children a valuable lesson, not only about making healthier life choices, but about making a goal and sticking to it. And to all of you teetering on the edge, trying to decide whether or not to begin working towards that goal – GO FOR IT! Tomorrow you will be thankful that you started today.
