Fitmark Ambassador Karina Baymiller encourages you to get out of your comfort zone
It happens to the best of us. We find a routine, we get comfy and cozy, and we stay there afraid of the unknown. After losing 60lbs and completely transforming myself, I had found a good routine. I was happy with the way my body looked and how I felt, so I didn’t have much of a goal to shoot for or anything new to focus on. I had toyed with the idea of competing to give my body and mind a new challenge, but stepping on stage in a bikini and walking around in heels scared the crap out of me, so naturally I pushed it off. After suggestions from friends and family, I had finally come around the idea of “maybe” signing of for a competition in April… maybe. I was still back and forth on the idea and nothing was set in stone.
Fast forward a few months to December. I made the finals for the 2013 Bodybuilding.com Bodyspace Spokesmodel Contest. I what? I made it to the finals? You must have the wrong Karina Baymiller. There were nearly 400 amazing women who entered and I made the final five. I’ll never forget the email I received titled, “Pack Your Bags”. I nearly passed out. And then I realized what making the finals meant. It meant I would be on stage in a bikini and heels, at the LA Fit Expo, in 5 weeks. Holy panic mode.
The show at the LA Fit Expo was my first competition ever. April 6th, 2013 was going to be my (maybe) competition debut, in Lakewood, Ohio. Heard of it? Didn’t think so. It’s small town. Cozy, safe, comfortable. Instead, I was going to be appearing on stage, 3 months earlier than originally expected, at the LA Fit Expo, in Los Angles, California. Ever heard of it? Yeah, I have too. Big and scary. I was the only female finalist that has not competed yet and I had literally no idea what I was doing to prep, or what being on stage actually felt like. I may have been at a slight disadvantage being the rookie, but you know what? I welcomed the challenge. I said “BRING IT ON!”
I wanted to push myself more than anyone, to show that I deserved to be there. I broke the training wheels off my bicycle and went for it. The result? I placed 2nd in the competition that hundreds had entered, and I tackled my fear of the stage head on.
So, my fit friends… let me challenge you today. Is there something in your life that you’ve wanted to do and have been putting off? Maybe you’ve thought about trying CrossFit but haven’t gone because you were worried about how you would do. Or maybe you’ve been running the same two-mile route for the last few months because that 3rd mile just sounds too far. Or maybe you’ve even wanted to compete like me, you just have sent in your entry form yet because you just aren’t sure if you’re ready. Whatever it may be, fitness related or not, why don’t you leave your training wheels at home? If it scares you, it might be something you should try. Leap, don’t just step, out of your comfort zone. Give it all you’ve got and ride around on two wheels instead of four. You know what? It feels pretty damn good.
