Fitmark Ambassador Bo Shin lays out a list of stretching techniques to help you stretch your way to a toned body
Along the years of working out, I’ve noticed that the most neglected type of routine from exercisers is stretching. The average person who is looking to increase muscle mass or achieve a lean physique, often do not realize that flexibility plays a major role in muscle growth. Think of each individual muscle as a rubber band. The more it is able to stretch, the more potential it has to grow. Another factor that people do not realize is that a flexible leads to a more symmetrical body. How? Take this for example: A person possessing a very inflexible chest will often have a rounded back; making them have the look of a “hunchback”. This leads into many issues when weight training. Not only does this cause improper form for other exercises to be properly executed, it causes dangerous risks for other various types of injuries.
Here are a few other benefits of stretching:
•Allows greater freedom of movement and improved posture
•Increases physical and mental relaxation
•Releases muscle tension and soreness
Perform each stretch by:
•Slowly, exhaling as you gently stretch the muscle.
•Holding each stretch for at least 10 to 30 seconds.
Avoid these mistakes:
•Don’t bounce a stretch. (Hold a stretch)
•Don’t stretch a muscle that is not properly warmed up.
•Don’t strain or push a muscle too far. Listen to your body. If it hurts, let go.
•Don’t hold your breath.
Remember, stretching allows your body to reap the full benefits of exercise. Taking a few minutes in between exercising or after a workout will make a great difference in every physical goal a person has.
Exercise smart, and stretch!
