Fitmark Ambassador Robin Romero explains the unexpected benefits you reap from hot yoga
“Exercising in 105 degrees? Are you NUTS?!?!” That was my initial reaction after being propositioned to try a hot yoga class. However, I made a personal goal for 2013 of trying one new fitness activity each month so after very little hesitation I hopped on the chance to take a class at the Point Loma Core Power in San Diego.
I walked into a warm quiet room with some people stretching, some sitting in silent meditation. It was a very comforting environment. The steam was bringing out the wonderful aroma of the wood that lined the dim room. “This is going to be so wonderful and relaxing,” I thought to myself. WRONG! So very wrong. Enter the instructor, a talk lean man with the most beautiful posture and long lines of a ballet dancer. He immediately took us through a quick series of poses, stretches, balance holds. It took me an entire 3 minutes to discover that if you get sweat in your contact lens, it stings! After 10 minutes I felt my muscles trembling, I was sweating in places I didn’t even know I had pores! Only 65 more minutes of this, I can hang. And then I had my first “Are you nuts?!?!” moment. We were instructed to attempt the “Eka Pada Koundiyanasan II” pose. The pose is even harder to do than to pronounce. I held it for about 0.7 seconds before my face came smashing down on my sweat-laden mat.
We went through a long but quick paced series for the remainder of the class. The instructor informed me at the end of his class that he considers it a relatively easy class for beginners. “Never again,” I thought to myself. I drank a full liter of water during the class. Every inch of my clothes was drenched, and on top of that I was starving. After making it home, drinking another 2 liters of water and scarfing down a protein shake, oatmeal and peanut butter, I took a long shower and put my tired bum to bed pondering how absolutely nuts people must be to enjoy hot yoga.
I woke up the next morning after the best night of sleep in my 33 years of existence. My skin was glowing, my muscles were so wonderfully relaxed and flexible, my joints were loose, and suddenly I found myself looking up the schedule to see when the next class was that I could attend. I guess I’m a little nuts too!
