Fitmark Ambassador Catrina Whitman explains how much of an impact the fitness world can be
My journey to the stage started last year at the Arnold Classic. After losing 70 pounds, from a transformation that changed my life, I added in cardio, and took up P90X. I had never committed to a full gym regime. I decided to attend this event not realizing what I was getting into. Body builders are awesome up close to say the least. I had an understanding of fitness, but after leaving the expo I was ready to rock and I learned so much while I was there. Who knew protein came in so many forms?! Meeting all my idols too was so rewarding. I was basically star struck the majority of the time. I look back on all my autographed photos I received last year, and at the time, most of them I had no clue who they were. Now I can’t believe I met that person. I was so clueless!
A girlfriend and I said that this year we would rock the stage at the Arnold bikini ready and fabulous, or work at one of the booths. We will not be competing this year, but I did get an offer to work a booth. I spent the last year understanding the importance of a beautiful physique, doing tons of research and working at GNC. Boy did I learn a ton!! I am more motivated than ever and ready to compete this summer. It’s not easy, believe me! When you have to make adjustments to fit into your lifestyle and adapt to everything, I got extremely cranky!! It’s so important to have a strong support group backing you up. Most people would run and hide when they saw me in diet mode, but my support system understood, thank goodness. I really do owe it to the ones close to me. Without them I would be such a mess.
Training for a fitness competition is demanding but so unbelievably rewarding. You learn how to stick to a schedule (very specific schedule) you learn right and wrong very quickly, and you’re new body is amazing! When people ask if you’ve lost weight, it’s one of the best feelings imaginable. We don’t just pick stuff up and put it down. It challenges both your mind and you body. Having to search for new tips and tricks to keep it interesting in the beginning seemed impenetrable. I kept making excuses for why I didn’t want to do this or that. Making excuses gets you nowhere. But now, I’m the one crushing other people’s excuses! I went from the unmotivated to the motivator. I love the thrill of it! I can’t wait to strut around this summer at the beach. For once, no cover-up will be needed y’all!
Stay strong, stay focused, and train hard!
