Fitmark Ambassador Mathew Freeman discusses the value of acting on your health now
If not now, when? I know that we have heard terms like this before. In fact, you have probably have heard this exact one. I have also been a fan of the saying, “What would you attempt if you knew you couldn’t fail” (author unknown). I often think of both of these statements when it comes to working out and staying on point with nutrition. You see many of us out there put ourselves off until we are forced into action. Until the doctor says you have to do something or suffer a dire consequence. We are often so busy with life that life itself is seeping out of us. After all we have the kids, the spouse, the job, the parents, the school work, bills, social gatherings, PTA, sports duties, registration, household chores and all the other stuff to do in a day. It is real easy to put ourselves on the back burner for lots of things not just health and wellness. It’s even easier when we do not believe we have what it takes to accomplish the image we have created in our minds. Time, money, discipline, genetics, circumstance all play a role in this belief or lack of a belief. So I ask you the very same question, “What would you attempt if you knew you couldn’t fail?”
It seems like an easy question but I’ve tried to answer it many times. Let me throw out a few ideas for you though related to our industry and our standard of business. Would you attempt to compete in the CrossFit Games? How about running your first marathon, doing your first powerlifting meet or bodybuilding show, a triathlon, the whole 30, 21 day detox, P90X for the first time? If you knew that you could not fail. If you knew that in the end you will have achieved exactly what you set out for would you do it? It seems like a no brainer right. We would all do it. I would compete in the CrossFit Games.
The situation is not that we do not have the time to attempt these dreams. It has more to do with our own definitions of failure. We do not attempt many of these things because attempting and not meeting our own expectation hurts. It’s harder to deal with than actually finishing behind another competitor with dreams and goals of their own. Our own fear of failure holds us back even when we know we could not fail. Therefore we need to create a new definition of success. We need to learn that true success is in the attempting but not attempting at all is where we fail. Without the attempt success cannot exist. All the things that we use as reasons, barriers, and roadblocks to us achieving what we want to achieve is fear disguised. It’s amazing how schedules clear up, money appears and things come together when we want it and we believe in it. It’s about value. Valuing ourselves I think is something that comes hard for a lot of people. It is a journey that I have really been on lately. Knowing that you deserve to treat yourself well with exercise down to the bag you carry; is important.
Let’s conclude this article by taking the advice of all major airlines. If you have not flown lately I will refresh your memory. Before every flight the stewards go through their pre-flight instruction. The instruction covers flight safety and what to do in a crisis event. In the event that oxygen is needed they go over how to secure the mask and how to get the oxygen flowing. It is during this part of the instruction that they always state “you must secure your own mask first before helping your children, spouse or neighbors”.
We take our health for granted. We spend this life so busy meeting the expectations that others place on us we forget to take care of ourselves. We place ourselves last and find all the reasons in the world to believe that is ok. We don’t get started because we don’t feel we will succeed. I am here to tell you that when I began to exercise and eat well my ability to care for my children grew exponentially. I’m attempting things that I never thought possible and even when I do not succeed I feel successful. I’m here to tell you that whatever you want to do you will not fail if you attempt it. Success as I said before is in the attempt. The attempt creates odds for success. Without attempting there is no probability of succeeding. Stop using the same reasons and roadblocks we often use and realize that you must take care of yourself first. Taking care of you creates an example others want to follow. Start today. Attempt that thing you were thinking about when you first read the question. If not now then when?
