Heart racing… mixed emotions… wondering what the heck am I about to embark on?! I call it LIFE. Hiking in the Colorado mountains will take everything to a whole new level, especially if you decide to hike one of Colorado’s 58 hike-able 14ers. Pikes Peak was on our list and the 31st highest in Colorado with a 26 miles round trip. This was first on the list of all of these great mountains.
We started our hike at the base of Barr Trail in Manitou Springs. This was mine and my husbands anniversary gift to each other, something we both have never done, and something we want to keep a tradition for years to come. We were told August is one of the better months to hike the 14ers because the likely hood of snow and ice at the top is slim, making it a safe time to hike.
We start the ascend which is not an easy task. My breathing is comfortable but we are climbing at around a 10 incline right off the bat. I had trained for this moment but had no idea what to really expect. We had plenty of water and lots of snacks to keep us moving. We wore layers as we heard it can get cold towards the top.
Along the way there were bicyclist and joggers coming down the trail. They had taken the first cog tram of the day up to the top so that they could descend down. We were not alone on our journey either. There were lots of hikers.
As we started to reach the top it became cold, desolate and very hard to breath. The chill felt great on our bodies cooling us off from all the heart pounding inclines we had been doing. The switchbacks were crazy and we were taking breaks every 5 mins for the last 2 miles. The air was so thin, you could feel your lungs burning. Thirst was huge at this point also. We finally reached the top. My heart felt exactly like it did when I first started. Never in my life did I think I would be “on top of the world” overcoming obstacles and fulfilling goals. The feeling is amazing and your heart feels like it drops similar to being on a roller coaster. The views are breathtaking. That 6 hour 13 miles will make your grow from the inside out. Wherever you are or whatever is close to you, get out and take a hike! You never know how much you can grow unless you give it a shot!
