This past weekend, I had the privilege of representing Team British Columbia at the Natural Nationals (IFBB World Qualifier) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, competing in the Men’s Physique Division. This was a high level event, with the overall winner of each category, being awarded a Pro Card, to compete in the IFBB Professional competitions. In addition, competitors finishing top 3 in their respective classes, have the opportunity to compete in the World Championships.
While we are all competitors, going up against each other once we are up on stage, the thing that truly impressed me, was the level of respect and support found between all of the Men’s Physique Competitors. Whether it be to encourage each other, sharing equipment to prepare before stepping on stage, or getting together to celebrate after the competition, there really was never any ill-will found present at any time. Personally, I have found that I have made great friendships with many of the same people that I stepped on stage with as a rival.
When I reflect back on this experience from the show, I can’t help but think we could all strive to bring this level of sportsmanship into our daily lives much more often. Why is it that so many times we find ourselves competing against co-workers and even friends at times? I myself am striving to continually look for ways to support and encourage those people I am surrounded by. This is kind of a selfish act, in the way that by helping another person to enjoy their day a little better, in turn helps me to enjoy my day even more.
So I encourage all of you, when faced with the potential of either putting someone down, or making yourself look good, by making another look bad, think twice. Trust me when I say you will feel so much better about yourself by lending support and encouragement, plus the positive energy will find a way to return to you.
