I have found over the years that I am a pretty driven individual. I’m not sure if this was a stroke of luck when I was born, or a result of having hard working parents as role models. (Thanks Mom and Dad!) I do know that as driven as I am, my motivation can waiver at times. We all have bad days, weeks, or even months. What do we do when that happens?
Take a break from things, allow yourself to clear your head and focus on what it is you really want. Once you feel recharged, it should be clear to you, that your goal is the same and you are once again motivated to set forth and achieve your goal(s).
If you still aren’t feeling motivated, then maybe it is time for a new outlet, or “sport”. Perhaps your focus has changed? That’s perfectly okay too, sometimes time away is the best medicine. I even recall a well known athlete by the name of Michael Jordan leaving basketball to play baseball for a few years, before coming back to excel at his original passion.
The bottom line is that it comes down to drive, passion and fun. If you aren’t feeling driven, do something to find that drive. If you no longer feel as passionate about your sport (perhaps you have gotten too serious about it), take some time to help others as this will often remind you of your passion, igniting the fire once more. Finally, have fun in what you are doing. If you don’t enjoy what you are doing, you can’t expect to give it 100%.
