10 minute warm-up, lift some heavy things, put them back down, do some cardio, stretch. Repeat and nausea. That essentially covers my fitness experience for the past 4 years. I found myself slipping into a very comfortable and familiar routine day to day, week to week. Still progressing, getting stronger, getting leaner, but I was hungry for more!
After some random searches on Google, I stumbled across Aerial Revolution in San Diego – “offering high quality cirque entertainment and classes.” Hold the presses! A circus school?!?! Oh yes, that had my name written all over it. After searching through the descriptions of the various classes they offer, I decided to try out the aerial silks class. I was familiar with this particular discipline due to my eternal love of Cirque du Soleil. I already pictured myself gracefully climbing, twirling and contorting in the air with nothing but two luxuriously long pieces of fabric to climb and cleverly wrap myself in.
The class began with a warm-up and group stretching. My eager self arrived 30 minutes early so I was already warmed up, limber and ready to climb! I impatiently went through the warm up with the rest of the class. We began learning different climbing techniques which surprisingly took more leg strength than upper body strength. Then we learned some wraps which was phenomenally more difficult than I ever imagined. I always considered myself a coordinated girl, but having to climb, wrap and twist left me entangled even worse than when I insisted I was going to be a yo-yo champion at age four. But let me tell you, the first time my arms, legs and mind joined forces and I mastered the skill our class was working on gave me an unbelievable sense of accomplishment. Good thing I made a friend in the class how promptly ran to grab my phone and snap a picture!
Breaking out of the gym and challenging myself in a new way lit a fire in me. Although I still love the comfort zone of the weight room, I realized how important it is to journey into the unfamiliar to become more of a well-rounded athlete. Up next? Trapeeze class? Stand-up paddleboard yoga? After climbing the silks, I now know the sky is truly the limit!
