Hey you. Yes you. I see you over there. Standing meekly in your brand new gym outfit complete with matching Nike Frees, fidgeting with the bottom of your new bright green tank top. You know what? I’m glad you’re here. I know the weights look scary. They’re big, and heavy, and hard, and cold. The men and women picking the large ones – curling, grunting, sweating – make things look a little scary. But once upon a time, they were right where you are. They had a “first day in the gym” too. They weren’t sure where to start, or how to start, what to do. But they figured things out, they asked for help, they found their groove, and you will too.
Yes you may hear some snickers or rude comments from a few select people, but guess what? No one is happy they’re here, we’re happy YOU are here! You see, whether it’s your first day in the gym or your one-thousandth day, we all have the same goal – to get better and stronger. The big muscle men, the fit ladies, the trainers, the athletes, they’re all happy you’re here too. You took a big step in the right direction just by showing up!
So put one foot in front of the other and walk on over to the weights. Grab one that you can handle, and just lift, curl, breathe, repeat. And then come back tomorrow and I’ll give you the same encouraging smile and say “have a great workout” once again to help you feel less “gymtimidated.” And some day, you’ll do the same for some other first time gym-goer and you’ll wonder why you were ever gymtimidated to begin with!
