There is something about the holidays that always pushes our limits when it comes to maintaining a sense of discipline through healthy food choices. Can you relate?
Whether you maintain clean eating on a regular basis or not, most of us struggle with the temptations of decadent sweet and savory dishes, especially through the holidays. Just completing a five month regimented meal plan for a fitness competition myself, I can personally attest to the struggle between wanting to delve into a variety of foods recently avoided, while not wanting to lose all the healthy gains made through fat loss. So how do I deal with it you ask?
No matter what our lifestyle is at the moment, one thing to realize is that we all have the ability to make choices. In my off season from competition prep my personal philosophy in maintaining balance and a commitment to my health is through “flexible eating”. What this means is that I create my meal plans based on macronutrient profiles which allows me to include a variety of fresh, organic whole foods the majority of the time for immune boosting and vibrant health, while also incorporating a few select treats or dishes to enjoy in small moderation.
The benefit of the “flexible eating” mindset is that it affords you the ability to maintain and stay committed to your healthy food choices with greater success in achieving your desired goal while allowing yourself the guiltless pleasure of enjoying a few select holiday treats. In addition, this practice cuts down on the urge to cheat from your diet virtually eliminating the desire to go overboard which can lead to binging.
The key to maintaining any diet, weight loss or clean eating regimen begins with a harmonious balance between feeling both emotionally and physically satisfied. If you change your perspective on food, realizing you always have control and the ability to enjoy most of what you want within reason and moderation, then you have the tools to get through the holidays and the rest of the year with success! Remember, healthy eating in conjunction with physical exercise and stress relieving holistic practices are essential tools for healthy aging and longevity.
I strongly encourage you consult your physician or healthcare practitioner for a complete health review prior to making any diet, exercise or lifestyle changes. The information contained herein is based on personal opinion and experience.
