You’ve probably spotted her on the latest Under Armour cold weather clothing commercials, supporting her recent comeback. In spite of suffering two ACL injuries, a torn MCL, a fractured tibial plateau and undergoing reconstructive knee surgery in the last 10 months, Vonn predicts she will win at Sochi. She has shown incredible determination and believes in her prediction, yet it is clear that her horrific accident haunts her as it would any athlete. Since her comeback, Vonn has had multiple accidents training for Sochi that pose as psychological hurdles. This past November 19th, Vonn partially tore her ACL in her reconstructed knee, forcing her to wear a knee brace. Incredibly enough, the other week she proved her toughness in her Super G ski event finishing fifth, just 0.85 seconds off the winning time. Although her injuries and knee brace have held her back in competing, Vonn at 90% is equivalent to her competitor’s 100%. Talk about being “rusty.”
Although admitting her nerves in an interview earlier in December, the 29 year old has had an unbelievable ski career thus far. As one of the top Alpine ski racers in the world, Vonn stands tied for most World Cup championships overall. She is just four wins shy from breaking the women’s record for World Cup victories. Vonn has made headlines even outside of skiing. Currently she is dating professional golfer Tiger Woods, who has had his own obstacles, both emotional and physical. Vonn’s sheer beauty and goals of empowering women, have made her a social icon and role model to young women everywhere. In 2010, Vonn called the doll, Barbie, “a liar”, emphasizing that a woman’s “real” athletic figure is far more powerful and beautiful than the unrealistic body image of Barbie. Well isn’t that the truth!
With her injuries, it is questionable if Sochi 2014 will be Vonn’s last go at an Olympics. At the very least Vonn wishes to win two medals as she did last Olympics. It would be one of her greatest accomplishments especially considering both the physical and psychological obstacles she’ll have to overcome. Whether she’s representing the USA skiing downhill at 80mph, battling her injuries, or empowering women with her beauty and physically fit image, Lindsey Vonn definitely Fits the Mark!
