We’ve already mentioned the “battle of the brothers”, but with 37 days until the Sochi Olympics, people can’t believe this amazing “sister act.”
Biathlete, Tracy Barnes qualified for the Sochi Olympics but decided her spot should belong to her twin sister, Lanny. Lanny, who unfortunately was sick during qualifying, missed three qualifying races, in addition to finishing in sixth place. That left her just one spot short of making team USA, which competes with five. Her sister, Tracy was one of the five to make the cut, but not for long. “I can’t even begin to describe what is means to me that Tracy made such a huge sacrifice for me”, says Lanny. Neither can we!
In a Biathlon competition, Biathletes like Lanny and Tracy, are required to ski distances varying from 7.5 to 20 kilometers. The other part of the competition involves target shooting.
Although they are not considered to be the top competitors in the world, the Durango, Colorado natives are no strangers to Olympic competition. The Barnes sisters competed in the 2006 Olympics in Toronto together, yet only Lanny qualified for the 2010 Olympic games. Since she has made three Olympic appearances for team USA. Despite being well off the podium coming in at 23rd, Lanny finished the event that year with the best American record since 1994.
Athletes train their whole lives to make it to the Olympics. Of those who train, only few actually qualify and make it there. One would never think to give up their hard earned Olympic spot, yet for Tracy Barnes it was second nature when it came to her sister. Because of their incredible “sister act” of selflessness, Tracy and Lanny Barnes definitely Fit the Mark!
