Variety is the spice of life. Variety is also the spice in our workouts. To keep the body burning, we have to keep “it” on “its” toes! Adding variety to your workout will
1. Create muscle confusion which will get you to your goals faster.
2. Challenge coordination that will lead to more burn in the workout
3. Mentally keep you engaged.
4. Keep you from getting bored.
One of my favorite ways to add variety to my workouts I’ve done a million times is to get out on the sand. Occasionally I do find myself in my ideal environment with white fluffy sand that meets clear blue crashing waves, but other times I’ve settled for a local sand volleyball court and had just as much fun and a GREAT workout!
The benefits from working out in the sand are HUGE!
During a sand workout, your…
The unstable surface…
- burns more calories
- makes exercises more challenging
- creates less impact on joints
- works the stabilizer muscles
If you aren’t convinced yet, let me put it this way: Sand training will improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, strength, balance, ability, reaction time and coordination!
So go find a beach, a lake (with a sandy shore), or a sand volleyball court and get moving!!!
Exercises to do in the sand:
- plyometric jumps
- Pilates using the Tye4@
These are just a few ideas!
Caution: Because of the unstable surface, the ankles, achilles, and knees are susceptible to injury-so don’t skip the warm-up and stretch!
