Fitmark Ambassador Ashley Benson shares how everyone can find a workout they love and how to change that dreaded workout session into something you can enjoy
As I reflect on the past years of personal training and leading fitness classes, I realized that I am tired of watching my clients struggle with the overwhelming task of adding better wellness into their already over-scheduled, cluttered life. Being that my clients are mostly women, many struggle as they juggle career, their job as wife, mother, home manager, organizer, secretary, cook, … the list goes on and these women are tired and confused. My clients know that in order to be the best at all of their responsibilities, they need to have a strong, powerhouse body. Their immune system needs to be top notch (after all, what mom has time to get sick?) and they need to have the energy of a super hero to keep up with it all. They would also really love to feel good in their own skin. Wouldn’t that be nice?
We’ve had many talks during our workout sessions about what they could add in to improve their own fitness and how they could tweak other habits. We’d find motivation and encouragement and then it was time to throw them back into the middle of life. I typically see my clients twice a week, and would look forward to hearing how our plan was being implemented from the last conversation. More often than not, nothing had changed because life took over, thing got confusing… and we’d start again.
As I reflected on this trend, I realized that two hours a week just is not enough. Also, I can’t tell you how many conversations about food and workouts I’ve had standing in parking lots, in the lobby at church, in the grocery store line, and in text messages. It’s like I get an S.O.S…. I hear, “HELP ME! I’m drowning in all my responsibilities, and I know I could do it all better if only I felt better, had more energy AND enjoyed being ME!”
I wish we could just push the pause button for a few minutes and not only think about, but live out together what it looks like to walk daily in better wellness. See, it’s about the small choices throughout the day that can make a big impact. Honestly, I’d rather be playing at the beach soaking up the sun or sit around the pool with a refreshing drink talking all day about all the dieting lies that are out there. Or maybe we could recline on the roof-top at night watching the stars, hearing the waves and talk about the new fitness trends. Let’s get to know each other. What have you been trying to do to make yourself better? Is this helping you reach your goals, or is it honestly hurting you.
I wish we could hang out before and after our session as you attempted to put together meals and snacks that will support your activity and daily responsibilities. This really needs to be good… something manageable and YUMMY that your family would actually eat as well! No more questions like, “I’m working out in an hour. Do I need to eat something now?” or “Ok, I just had the BEST workout! Feeling good and don’t want to screw it up by what I put in my mouth. What should I eat?”
And let’s talk about that workout for a second… If you dread it, you will not stick with it. It is possible for EVERYONE to find some kind of activity you enjoy. This is important. I find that even when the workout might not be considered “fun”, the environment can make or break the experience. Also, what you do in your workout really makes a difference. I say, “It’s good if your body is stronger tomorrow from the workout you did today. It’s great if you’re body is stronger in two years from the workout you did today.”
I’m tired of these thoughts, dreams and conversations just playing out in my head. So I’m moving them from dreams to reality through Health & Fitness Vacations!
