In a sport where remarkable athletes train to fight each other, the challenges for MMA fighters are real and quite dangerous. An unprepared fighter can set himself up for not only defeat, but severe physical punishment. This makes the recent news of former UFC champion, Georges St. Pierre, tearing his ACL a more engaging story. GSP, as he is often referred to, announced he was taking time away from the Octagon after his last UFC fight. Now with yet another challenge to surpass, St. Pierre has to decide if he is willing and able to continue contending after what will be his second knee surgery.
St. Pierre, a personality known for his work ethic in the gym, is not suggesting this is the end of his career. In his tweet announcing the injury, St. Pierre writes, “Tore my left ACL in training. Surgery in a few days. Rehab, pain, hard work, no shortcuts – I’ll soon be back at 100%. Thanks for the support.” This attitude is what has brought success to the 3-time Welterweight Champion.
GSP’s popularity has grown outside of MMA circles. He has a major role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier which came out on Friday, April 4th and had a role in 2009’s Never Surrender. Will he be complacent with an acting career or will we see Georges St. Pierre in another title bout? Only the future will tell, but with his commitment to stay in shape and fight through pain, Georges St. Pierre definitely Fits the Mark.
