Receiving 119 first-place votes, the Oklahoma City Thunder star forward Kevin Durant won the NBA’s coveted MVP award for the regular season. Despite multiple scoring titles, this is Durant’s first MVP season, and it was well deserved. Kevin Durant lit up the league this year scoring 32 points per game, shooting a scorching 50% from the field, and marking a career-high 5.5 assists per game. His offensive dominance led to the Thunder’s regular season success, acquiring the second best record in the hypercompetitive West Conference. As if these weren’t impressive enough, many people in NBA circles have agreed that the forward’s defense had improved by a significant degree this season.
Durant’s acceptance speech, however, may have out-shined his basketball play. On a stage with his teammates, an emotional Kevin Durant acknowledged his family, thanking them for their support. Then, he moved the room to tears as he began speaking about his mother. Remembering the early days with his single mother, Durant said, “When something good happens to you…I tend to look back to what brought me here.” He then recounts some of the memories of his family trying to make ends meet. Durant credits his mother for all of it saying, “You sacrificed for us. You’re the real MVP.”
Durant’s speech was an exemplary moment of humility and gratitude. He turned a night meant to honor his play into an instance where everyone remembered and appreciated their parents and family. For his stellar play and timely reminding us to spoil our moms this weekend, Kevin Durant Fits the Mark.
