On Memorial Day, registrants of The Murph Challenge will be asked to submit their ‘MURPH’ time for a chance to compete in The Murph Challenge Invitational on June 28th. The Murph Challenge is an annual fundraiser benefiting the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. The foundation was named after an honorable Navy Seal.
LT Michael P. Murphy hails from Suffolk County, New York. He attended and graduated Penn State with dual degrees in political science and psychology. After college, Murphy became a Navy SEAL in July 2002. He served on multiple War on Terrorism missions before serving on Operation Red Wings. Murphy led a four-team SEAL element tasked with finding a key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. An intense gun fight ensued as the SEAL’s presence in the area was discovered by Taliban fighters. Greatly outnumbered and in extreme terrain, the SEALS were found pinned down without the ability to contact headquarter.
Selflessly, Murphy moved away from the protective mountain rocks, opened himself up to enemy fire and made contact with the SOF Quick Reaction Force at Bagram Air Base to request assistance. In the process, Murphy was wounded, but it did not deter him from returning to his men to continue the battle. He was eventually killed in battle, but was posthumously awarded to Congressional Medal of Honor. For his selfless actions and brave spirit, we honor him this Memorial Day Weekend.
