It’s not just baseball players who go through spring training. This time of year, most of us fitness enthusiasts are switching up our training programs and getting cut.
Beach ready is what we all have on our minds or at least prancing around naked in the bedroom with no shame! Are you ready to sweat? Because that’s what it takes to get lean and mean.
Presumably you’ve been working hard all winter and put on some bulk and now it’s time to get shredded and show off some muscle definition. When it comes to training advice, one expert we admire is Dr Jim Stoppani. His programs – Shortcut to Size and Shortcut to Shred – have been tried and tested by the folks at Fitmark and we like the results. Are you ready to get started?
Stoppani promises that in just six weeks you can lean out your body and burn off that winter fat. Provided you’ve put in the time during the winter to gain some muscle mass, then you’re good to go. You need a solid foundation to work with here. This is not a beginner’s workout program.
The secret is interval training and muscle confusion. No more rest periods for you, my friend. We’re going for the burn! After each set of high intensity resistance training, instead of resting you’re going to perform one minute of cardio. It’s called cardio acceleration. The goal is keep your heart rate elevated for the duration of your workout, so you’re burning fat at the same time as building muscle.
Here are some cardio acceleration suggestions:
- Jump Rope
- Knee Tuck Jump
- Mountain Climbers
- KB Swings
Stoppani is a big believer in periodization and microcycles, which means that each week you’ll change your rep range and lifting weight to keep your muscles guessing and prevent them from plateau-ing. In fact, there’s an additional change mid-week in this six-day program. So for the first three days, you’ll concentrate on multi-joint exercises, increase your weight and decrease your reps. Then on day four, you’ll focus on single joint exercises and increase your reps, while decreasing your weights.
This program is easy to follow with exercises, videos and nutrition advice all laid out for you. No guesswork required. Just show up and get ready to sweat. You’ll be beach ready before the beaches even open in time for summer!
