It’s not easy pinning down a champion like Fitmark Ambassador Frankie Edgar, but we managed to catch up with him to get him to spill the beans on his diet and nutrition! What exactly fuels an MMA athlete of this caliber?
Frankie has never really had to worry about cutting weight, and dieting is something he seldom does. Meal prep, weighing food and measuring portions, isn’t part of his routine:
“I don’t really count calories. Before a fight, I’ll eat a little cleaner than normal. I don’t cut a lot of weight, so it isn’t a huge deal though. Especially since I normally eat pretty healthy.”
Frankie practically grew up inside a gym, having spent much of his childhood training. He’s picked up a few things about diet and what foods to eat from hanging around the pros. He told us:
“I keep all foods organic and natural. I eat light, quick-digesting foods before training so my stomach isn’t full, and protein after workouts. Cheat meals are whatever I feel like, as they are cheat meals! Basically I just eat clean and stay away from processed junk food. The majority of my diet is lean meats, fruits, and vegetables.”
In a previous article, Frankie told us that he trains “6 days a week, twice a day.” With that kind of schedule, you can imagine the kind of calories the MMA fighter must consume to fuel his body, not to mention hydration. He said,
“Due to all my training, I need to drink a lot of water throughout the day.”
The truth of the matter is, if you want to know about Frankie’s diet from the inside out, you’ll have to ask his wife, Renee! She’s the chief meal prepper in the household. Frankie told us,
“My wife usually has food ready for me when I get home from training.”
Being on the road away from home and Renee’s cooking, how do you stay on track?
“Being on the road makes nutrition a little tougher. You just have to have some discipline and avoid the easy but unhealthy choices, and eat at quality restaurants or hit up a grocery store.”
So what does Frankie think of the Fitmark Shield?
“It’s a really cool bag. I like the way it looks, but more importantly it is functional. It really suits what I do.”
When we catch up with Frankie next time, we’ll be talking about fitness and family, and his upcoming fight against Chad Mendes, December 11th at the Octagon.
