What a treat it was to be part of the Teen Summit Pre-Session at the Boys and Girls Club in Pasadena this past weekend. Fitmark Founder and CEO, Mark Samuel joined a panel of expert guest speakers to talk about his experience in the world of business and building a career in the fitness industry.
These career and development sessions are part of the BGC’s after-school programs, made possible by the Los Angeles County Alliance for Boys & Girls Clubs and Executive Director Mary Hewitt’s phenomenal team.
A lot of great questions about how to reach goals, get over obstacles and pursue dreams from this group of about 100 kids. My hope is to inspire them all with some real talk about my own experiences – Mark Samuel, Fitmark Founder and CEO
The Teen Summit Pre-Sessions are a build-up to an amazing event held by the Alliance every year at UCLA. It’s part of their career and development program and offers a full day of educational activities and opportunities for these teens. Hosted by the Los Angeles County Alliance for Boys & Girls Clubs (that represents a total of 27 clubs in the area), the 2015 Teen Summit this year is all about diversity, inclusion, and acceptance in today’s society:
We will have positive messages where teens will hear keynote speakers and take part in workshops that cover such issues as online and offline bullying, LGBT issues, goal-setting, and self-acceptance. We will also have guest speakers who promote continuing education, and experts to provide insight into successful careers and great futures ~ Los Angeles County Alliance
As you know, Fitmark has been actively involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs, donating thousands of back-to-school bags through their giving back program called 1 For 100. And we don’t intend to stop anytime soon. Mark Samuel said,
It’s a real privilege speaking with these kids. If I can help at least a handful, that’ll be a win since I plan to be involved even more throughout the years.
The Boys & Girls Clubs in the Los Angeles Alliance serve over 140,000 youth aged 6-18 through after-school programs:
Our goal for every member who walks through our doors is for them to experience academic success, develop good character and citizenship, and practice healthy lifestyles.
The Alliance supports these efforts by “securing resources, marketing, and financial support to further the efforts of individual Clubs and increase the impact and reach in their communities.”
“I love spending time with these kids and getting involved,” Mark said:
My favorite point that I often leave with these kids has to do with legacy. What do you want it to be? How do you want to be known? What will others say about you? Have that lead you in the right direction when you’re faced with tough choices and you have tough decisions to make.
