Fitmark Ambassador Frankie Edgar: Time to “turn up the intensity!”
Known for his cardio fitness and relentless all-round MMA skills, Frankie told us he “can stand up to the best of them.” When it comes to training, he “trains all the time for a fight, adjusting” his technique “based on his opponent.”
With his next fight on December 11 against Chad Mendes, he’s been busy “working on technique.” On a typical day, he’s in the gym at 9, “twice a day, 6 days a week”:
“First training session in the morning is an hour of sparring, strength conditioning and wrestling. Then I take a break. I’m back at 5 for personal training with coaches. Depending on what day it is, we work on mat and pad work or strength conditioning.”
Busy working on technique…training for a fight all the time…does Frankie visualize his opponent during training? Is visualization part of his strategy?
“I do it unconsciously. I’m thinking about my opponent, thinking about the fight, so it’s on my mind, I’m thinking – Chad Mendes.”
The best part of training is trying to “find the perfect balance.” Really, it’s all about “performance and feeling good for your camp,” Frankie told us. “When what you’re working on is coming to light and it’s working for you,” that’s the best part.
Frankie says he’s “excited about his next fight. They kept pushing me back, but once I found out there was a fight in December, I’ve been excited about getting another one in before the end of the year.”
So what’s Frankie’s strategy? He gave us the inside scoop:
“Chad Mendes has heavy hands and a strong wrestling base. He’s a high volume fighter. I’m going to fight to my strengths and make him work as hard as I can to drain him by making him fight big in the lighter rounds.”
A victory on December 11 for Frankie means “ a shot at the title, barring a crazy” result and a rematch “between Aldo and McGregor.” He says:
“I’ve been working hard and training like crazy, so make sure you tune in, December 11, and support me!”
