Staying on track and sticking to your fitness program is a challenge for anyone, especially at this time of year. For the secrets to staying true to your goals, despite your schedule, we contacted Sheriff’s Sergeant Chrissy Garcia-Nagaye in Santa Clara County. She agrees it’s all about planning ahead, especially when it comes to meal prep.
Fitmark Ambassador Chrissy Garcia-Nagaye: My Fitmark bag is perfect because I transport all my food to work at the beginning of the work week.
With a military background, being disciplined and sticking to the program is second nature to Chrissy. It’s this kind of training that helped her achieve so many of her goals today. After three years of competing at the IFBB level, she decided to devote her time to raising a family. Now three children and eight years later, she is once again ready for the stage. She told us:
Previously, I would research the Internet for hours. I tracked my diet, nutrition, and workout all on my own. I didn’t have children back then and it was easier.
Back then, before children, Chrissy was enlisted in the United States Army from 1991 to 1996:
For three years I was a Medic in C Company 64th Forward Support Battalion. For my last two remaining years I was the Training Sergeant and the First Sergeant’s personal driver.
Chrissy joined the Office of the Sheriff in Santa Clara County in 2002, and was recently promoted to the rank of Sergeant. She says,
I worked the line for six months and was recently given a specialty assignment within the Custody Bureau Administration. My official title is Compliance Sergeant. I am in charge of ensuring that the two jails in our county are in compliance when it comes to updating Policy and Procedures like ADA (the American’s with Disabilities Act), PREA (the Prison Rape Elimination Act), etc.
Now with a family, a new promotion at work to the rank of Sergeant, and busy 10-hour shifts, Chrissy’s hired a coach to help her stay on track:
I hired Coach Kim Oddo. He gives me a very detailed diet, nutrition, and workout plan. I email him pictures (quarter turns) every week and call him every other week. He’s my knight in shining armor! Without him, I wouldn’t be competing just because it’s so difficult to juggle my job, my kids (twin daughters 5 y/o), and my life. Kim gives me everything I need.
Kim’s motto – Trust the process – I do, and it truly works.
That process includes a full weekly workout schedule that looks something like this:
- Sunday: legs and calves
- Monday: shoulders and biceps, abs and cardio
- Tuesday: cardio
- Wednesday: back and rear delts, abs and cardio
- Thursday: legs
- Friday: cardio
- Saturday: chest and triceps, calves and cardio
How does Chrissy fit such an intense workout program into her busy schedule?
I work out during the mornings on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Tuesday through Friday, I train after the kids have their baths and that’s usually around 8:15 p.m. I’ll get home between 10-10:30 p.m.
Chrissy does all her own meal prep. She says:
I don’t trust any company to cook for me. I try to stay with all organic foods, especially meats. I’m able to pack all of my chicken for the entire week. I’m very fortunate to have a kitchen at work, and can keep all my food properly stored at work for the week. Because I work 10 hours, there’s no need to eat on the run.
Meal prep is so important to sticking to your diet and nutrition plan. Having the right bag to transport your food and take it with you makes all the difference. Chrissy says:
My Fitmark bag is perfect because I transport all my food to work at the beginning of the work week. During the week, because the food compartment collapses, it’s a great gym bag! I get so many compliments on my Fitmark bag. It’s easily the best bag ever!
Even on her days off, when Chrissy is out and about, or at one of her kids’ events, she relies on her Fitmark bag. She says:
I can depend on my Fitmark bag to take to my kids’ events to hold snacks, and my food can stay properly cooled and stored the entire time I’m out and about. It’s fashionable and practical. I love that my Fitmark bag is soft sided. It doesn’t at all look like a cooler. It’s just absolutely awesome!
