It’s always great to see people in the medical field embracing the fitness lifestyle, like Fitmark Ambassador Brett Kahn. As a doctor of chiropractic, Brett combines his medical expertise with his knowledge of the human body and how it performs in the gym to fine tune his own training program. He’s got the edge over the competition and the trophies to prove it!
My approach to fitness and nutrition varies because my background is in athletics. But now I compete in bodybuilding, and try to keep my workouts dynamic and powerful, yet functional. I often stick to the bodybuilding basics but finish my workout with agility drills.
Brett’s portfolio is an impressive one, because he’s not only a sponsored athlete currently competing in his division, but he told us, he’s also the owner and operator of a chiropractic office that he started four years ago.
Finding Time to Work, Lift and Compete
How does a doctor with a busy chiropractic office find balance or what we like to call, work-lift balance? Brett says it’s all about: “Planning, planning, planning. Often times, I have to plan my schedule right to the minute.”
Planning takes a lot of organization and the right bag for the job. Brett has been using his Fitmark Envoy Duffel for a while now and told us:
My Fitmark bag helps me keep myself organized with my busy schedule. I pack my daily meals, my fitness gear and supplements, and my work files in there! I don’t go anywhere without it.
Diet and Nutrition
Brett was always active in sports and played football “all the way through college at Michigan State University.” But something happened during his senior year that would affect the way he approached his training, and especially his diet and nutrition. He told us:
My senior year, I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. At that point, I decided to further my education in fitness. Six years later, after graduating with my doctor in chiropractic, I decided to do a local men’s physique competition as a bucket list event. It spurred my passion for the sport and ever since, I’ve been enjoying the journey.
When you’re training at the athletic level and trying to manage diabetes at the same time, finding the proper balance takes a bit of tweaking. Brett has a great way of explaining how it all comes into play:
My diet consists of keeping a proper balance between my macros, insulin for my diabetes, and activity level. I often describe it as balancing a scale with three to five sides. Each variable affects the other; therefore, I am always calculating and adjusting one variable or another to keep my blood sugar in check and my health optimum.
Favorite Go-To Recipe
Everybody has a favorite meal that they turn to in a pinch and for Brett, it’s “Ezekiel bread with almond butter and cut-up banana!” With that old standard, you can’t go wrong! Brett also recommends “Dymatize for good recipes.”
