If there’s one thing you can say about fitness, it’s never routine! It can never get boring because there’s always changes to be made – tweaks here or there to keep up with the changing demands of your body as you get older. Since turning 30, Fitmark Ambassador Brittany Coutu has noticed her body isn’t responding the way it used to, so it’s time to change things up.
Above all, Brittany loves fitness for the way it makes her feel. She says being active elevates her mood and there’s no better feeling in the world. But this year has seen a lot of changes for Brittany and her regular routine is not up to muster. She told us:
My diet right now has changed dramatically. I was so lean and photoshoot ready for so long I needed a break from beating my body up in the gym! I’ve always been able to maintain a healthy diet since the food I crave the most is of nutritional value, but my gym mode has lacked. So I listened to my body for once and the changes as a woman of not only turning 30 but going off my birth control and…well, my body isn’t responding the way I want it too.
With the added stress of moving across country from Connecticut to California and adjusting to her new environment, it’s taken a while for her to settle into her new home and find a gym she can call her own. She told us:
I think with the move I was struggling to find a new gym I could call home. I think for me that’s the hardest part because I don’t just weight train anymore. I like to include a lot of mixed training. I have recently in the past year revisited my training as an athlete. So that includes mobility, strength and stability training. It’s been about 6 months and I am finally growing accustomed to the area and was able to find a new gym that I am currently going to 5x a week.
When You Hit A Plateau, It’s Time To Change It Up
Life is always changing and sometimes you’re prepared for these changes and sometimes they just creep up on you. Either way, it should reassure you to know it’s not unusual to experience changes in your body while the world changes around you. Age, diet, environment, stress, all have an impact on your hormones and that can lead to weight gain and other changes in your body. So what do you do?
Brittany told us:
As far as training and diet I just have tried to stay focused on routine. Shocking my body with HITT cardio and high intensity CrossFit workouts seems to be working, but my body is still holding on to water weight and fat. My diet should be cleaning up a little bit more as the weeks go on, but it was a huge adjustment and my goodness did my metabolism and hormones take a hit.
Anyone can experience these kinds of changes and setbacks in their training and nutrition. If it happens to you, it’s a good idea to seek the advice of personal trainer like Brittany to find out what’s going on and how to re-design your fitness program. She told us:
As long as you plug away day by day making sure you’re putting in the work at the gym and maintaining a healthy diet, you will see results. I promise you may be so frustrated and annoyed, but there will be one morning when you wake up and you will see that it is all paying off. Just stay positive and keep enjoying the journey.
Staying On Track With Meal Prep
Now that Brittany is back on track and meal prepping again, she’s in a better position to make better choices with her food. She told us:
My Fitmark Bags travel with me daily. I am able to be on the go and make healthier decisions at all times. I have the Velocity Backpack that has been amazing to travel with either on the airplane, or when I am going to shoot marketing material. The Box LG has been my go-to for meal prepping for my shows and everyday life! And I am super excited to get the Envoy Duffel next as my everyday gym bag!!
The important thing to remember is not to get discouraged if your workout isn’t cutting it anymore. Because you can easily make adjustments to your training and your diet to get the results you want. Changing things up is always a good thing and one of the ways to keep your fitness routine fresh. As Brittany says, “Just stay positive and keep enjoying the journey!”
