As the saying goes, couples who sweat together stay together and for very good reason. Fitness has the power to improve your own health and greatly increase your chances of developing a long and lasting relationship with your partner. All it takes is an awkward glance across a crowded gym to get the spark going, as was the case for Fitmark Ambassadors Jeff and Kristen Davis.

Jeff and Kristen share a passion for fitness and competing on stage. It’s a lifestyle that brought them together and one that will keep them together. They told us:
We were both actually prepping for a local competition the first time we talked. We always saw each other in our gym, made awkward glances at each other but never spoke until Jeff approached me at the gym about an upcoming posing seminar.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular at the gym, working out together is an amazing way to get closer to your partner. It’s an opportunity to spend some quality time together, while getting healthy at the same time. Jeff and Kristen absolutely agree! They told us:
Living this lifestyle with someone who shares the same passion, the same drive, the same respect, and the same goals has made our bond as best friends and as husband and wife stronger than anything we’ve ever experienced before. We said before we were married and both on stage prep, that if we could get through this emotional roller coaster of training and dieting for the stage, then we can make it through anything – haha!
Couples Who Sweat Together Stay Together
Working out together is much like a romantic dance (or so the studies suggest) and can increase the emotional bond that exists between you and your partner. The secret lies in coordinating your movements like running at the same pace, weightlifting in sync or using exercises like medicine ball throws that involve two people. It’s a dance or mimicry that creates a connection with your partner without even saying a word!
Several other studies have found lots of other positive health benefits of working out with your partner. We asked Jeff and Kristen for their take on these positive effects of working out together.
Motivation – Hold Each Other Accountable
There’s nothing like having a workout partner to kick you into gear when you need it the most. Motivation is at the top of the list for Jeff and Kristen. They told us:
This has been one of the best parts of being in a healthy relationship and supporting each other in our goals both inside and out of the gym. We’ve learned what our limits are and how far to push each other. Granted it has taken time and effort to get on common ground with things, but it’s always been an easy effort and we’re doing things we never even thought we could do on our own.
Health and Longevity
Most couples want to grow old together and live a long and healthy life. Working out together is the best way to make that happen. When you’re both on the same page, there’s never any arguments over falling into unhealthy habits. Jeff and Kristen told us:
This has been the EASIEST part of our relationship. We both LOVE this lifestyle, and we both love competing. We have the same goals in life, so there aren’t any arguments over time spent at the gym or not wanting to go out to eat. We only have discussions on who’s cooking the chicken next, and how we are seasoning it! 🙂
Shared Interests, Experiences, and Hobbies
Not only can physical exercise make you feel more in love with your partner, it can also strengthen your emotional bond. In many studies, couples who sweat together reported feeling more fulfilled in their relationships. This was especially true if the couples shared a fitness goal like competing on stage or running a marathon. Jeff and Kristen agree:
We travel quite a bit when competing and we’re normally on a strict diet, which could be a disaster for some, but for us it’s made us stronger, and we’ve made so many memories together, it’s been a blessing. Having someone who can read your mind about food or packing or how we’re going to afford this, makes every decision easier. Jeff is my rock and I am his…bottom line! We take turns taking care of each other and depending on whose show is first, that person takes priority. Then we flip flop. That way the person who is taking stage first doesn’t have to stress. We just push through and support each other, know and respect each other, and are there for the great times and a shoulder to cry on when times get rough.
Respect – You Understand Each Other’s Hustle
There’s something to be said for having a partner that understands your hustle and what it takes to achieve your fitness goals. It’s even better if those goals are the same or if you’re competing at the same show like Jeff and Kristen:
Respect is number one for our marriage. We both have been in horribly disrespectful relationships in our past so we made a pact to never make each other feel like that again. We support, cheer on, motivate, and share the experiences together. We have always prepped together – it’s easier. Two sets of prepped meals, both of us doing our cardio, both of us depleting, both of us shining on stage. It’s how we choose to live our life. Both on prep together and both on off-season together. It makes it easier and more enjoyable.
Couples Who Meal Prep Together Stay Together
Both Jeff and Kristen are members of the Fokken Strong family, and Jeff works under Brandan Fokken as an online personal trainer and meal prep coach. Food plays a very important role in living this healthy lifestyle and meal prep is another shared activity Kristen and Jeff enjoy as a couple. They told us:
We prep Sundays! Grocery shop, cook and weigh out our food. We both bring our Fitmark Bags with us when we go to work or when we travel. The containers are great (no spillage, haha!) and the meal bags are compact yet big enough to hold all of our food. When we travel we ALWAYS weigh our food out and throw it in our Fitmark Bags. We can’t imagine living our lives without our Fitmark Bags, they make life easier. We are so blessed to be brand ambassadors for such a great, inspiring company.
Physical exercise and the effect it has on the body hits all the same pleasure centers in the brain as does getting cozy with your partner, so it’s no wonder it brings couples closer together. The active ingredient is sweat!
