There’s always something new to learn and different to try, which makes it all the more exciting but also a little daunting at the same time. Nutrition Is Everything
When you first start out and want to start working out and eating better, the trick is to keep it simple. Try not to take on everything all at once. There is a lot of information out there and it can get very confusing and overwhelming. Cleaning up your diet has got to be the best place to start making some healthy changes. Introduce yourself to meal planning and prepping your meals ahead of time. Hazel told us:
One thing I have to say is that diet is key. If you don’t have a good diet you won’t get what you want point blank. So I have a meal plan; I dislike calling it a ‘diet’ because I’m not trying to lose weight, I’m trying to improve by building myself up. I eat my 6 meals a day and yes, I’ve been doing this for quite a while. It’s tough. I mean, I want a donut every single day! But we know that won’t help much in fitness – lol! We can learn how to balance it out though.
Balance Is Key
So balance is key and finding a meal plan flexible enough that you can customize it to fit your fitness goals as you progress on your journey. Counting calories is no longer your main concern, but eating the right nutrients in the right balance – that’s the kind of ‘diet’ you need. With a flexible meal plan, you’re allowed to cheat…at least a little. Hazel told us:
Eat nice and clean during the week, but on the weekends is when you allow yourself a cheat meal. I cook my own food but if I’m doing a show I do order pre-made protein in bulk and I cook the rest of the ingredients – my carbs and veggies.
That’s not to say it’s going to be easy, but after time it will become second nature and no matter how much you crave something, knowing how good you feel and how far you’ve come with your fitness plan will give you the fuel to stick with it. Hazel told us:
I love pastries and it’s so hard not to eat donuts – lol! I just imagine how good my donut will taste on my cheat day. It gets boring eating almost the same thing all the time, but I just imagine my happy place with my donut and it makes everything better – lol!
Something else that makes everything better is having the right meal bag to transport all your food for the day so you never need to miss a meal or stray from your meal plan. Hazel told us:

- Diet is key always! I can’t say it enough, there is no in-between. If you want results, you have to stay consistent.
- Don’t ever compare yourself to other people, because we all have different bodies and we all have different genetics. You are you, so don’t compare. Just learn about your own body and learn to love it. You can get to your goal; it’s all in the mind.
- Also for females, I say stop being scared of weights! You won’t get bulky or look manly. Weight lifting is a great way to burn calories, more than cardio. Don’t be scared. Just go for it! We all started somewhere and we all didn’t know how to lift weights, so just go for it!
Realizing how much discipline and commitment it takes to stick to a healthy lifestyle should make the journey easier. Like Hazel says, “It’s tough!” But it’s worth it and as is often the case, the harder you have to work for something, the sweeter the reward. In this case, as sweet as a donut!
