When you get bitten by the fitness bug, you just never know where it’ll take you. For Fitmark Ambassador Denetra Blackshear, fitness took over her love for dance and changed the direction of her career path.

Entering the gym to stay in shape with the big leagues, Denetra found herself smitten with the whole health and fitness lifestyle. She told us:
I got into the fitness lifestyle after my hip hop dance career in Los Angeles. I was in L.A. auditioning for artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and dancing for artists like Calvin
Harris and Pharrell. I soon learned that I would have to stay in shape to be able to keep up.
That’s when she decided to take her training to the next level. It was a decision that changed her life forever. She told us:
Soon the gym and the clean eating took over. Next thing you know I am certified by NASM, training people 1-on-1, running boot camps, have an online app, and competing in fitness bikini competitions!
Nutrition Is Key To Success
Nutrition is key when you’re following a healthy lifestyle. Denetra keeps her diet pretty simple, but sticks to the principles of counting macronutrients and tracking everything you eat. She told us:
I have different diets throughout the year since sometimes I am prepping for a show. On my off season I keep it simple. I count my calories for my specific goals (weight loss, muscle gain, etc.). I use a calorie counting app like “MyFitnessPal” and make sure I never go over. And then I schedule my 2 cheat meals a week.
As you get closer to your own fitness goals, you’ll want to think about changing things up and re-visiting your nutrition program. For Denetra, when she prepping for the stage, she has to reel in her diet and pay strict attention to everything she’s eating. She told us:
During Contest prep I have a very strict meal plan. I pretty much eat the same things every day and there are no cheats! It can get really hard, but the satisfaction I get when I am on that stage is totally worth it.
Pack Your Meals, Stick To Your Meal Plan
When it comes to sticking to your meal plan, the biggest mistake you can make is not packing your food and taking it with your wherever you go. Even if you think you’re just going to run out to the store for a few minutes, grab your cooler and your next meal so you don’t get caught short. Denetra told us:
