Ever wonder what all the hype is about eating organic?
Organic food is grown and processed without using synthetic pesticides, heavy metals, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms (GMO) often yielding fruits and vegetables with greater nutritional value. For organic dairy, eggs and meat, livestock must have the ability to graze and access the outdoors, be free of antibiotics and synthetic growth hormones, and be fed organic and GMO-free feed. This all means that organic food tends to be fresher (since there are less preservatives to make them sit on a shelf longer) and contain fewer pesticide residues. Just to note, this does not mean that organic food is 100% free of pesticides. Organic crops do have a limited amount of pesticide, much lower than conventional crops. In addition, some organic foods have approximately 20% more antioxidants.
Is it healthier to eat organic? Yes and no. Of course, it depends on what you eat. You can eat a pound of organic chocolate and it may have less chemicals, preservatives or pesticides; however, it is still chocolate. What eating organic does tend to do is help people eat better and healthier. Eating organic foods encourages people to be aware of what they consume, in particular eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed snacks or junk foods.
While eating organic has become very popular, it is a luxury and not an option for most people. You need to assess whether the extra cost of eating organic is worth the health benefits. If eating entirely organic is not feasible for your wallet, you can try a modified organic diet. Try to buy organic produce that appears on the Dirty Dozen list which have been shown to have higher rates of pesticide residue. This list includes strawberries, blueberries, apples, grapes, peaches, celery, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, red peppers and kale.
