The CrossFit Regionals are as much about team competition as they are about the individual effort. It “is as much a mental game as it is physical,” says Steve Hoover from Team Terminus, Atlanta, Georgia.

“Our team is a family. Everyone has a role to play and without all the pieces, we are not as strong.”

With a total of 45 teams competing worldwide in the CrossFit Regionals, it’s anybody’s game to win, but “communication and strategy are keys to success,” says Steve. “Each athlete has strengths and weaknesses and successful teams know how to highlight the strengths of each team member.”

Success is something that happened last week for Team Terminus at the Atlantic CrossFit Regionals:

“Terminus—which began the day in second place by 1 point — took a commanding lead after Team Event 6 and never let up, taking first place overall with 576 points to grant the South East Region the top spot at the Atlantic Regional” ~ Atlantic Team Report: Day 3

When you look at this kind of workout and the demanding load on the body over three days, you have to wonder what kind of nutrition and training program an athlete would follow going into the Regionals. We asked Steve:

Training and Nutrition

“My training and nutrition remain the same. I try to eat whole foods and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. I cut out some of the sweet treats and ‘cheat’ foods but nothing drastic.

“Training remains the same with a taper the week headed into the Regionals. I follow the Squat Mafia training program and Ben Benson does a great job of making sure we are ready and rested for the Regionals weekend. The closer we mimic the competition settings in our training, the more comfortable we will be on the floor.”

And when you’re not on the floor, what WOD do you do for ‘fun’?

Favorite WOD

“My favorite WOD is King Kong – the combination of heavy barbells and gymnastics plays to my strengths. Moving from deadlifts to muscle-ups to cleans and then handstand push-ups really tests your skills as an athlete.”

Strengths are something Team Terminus has in spades. That and “a trust between the teammates that pushes everyone harder. You are not completing the workout for yourself, you are doing it for your team.”

Together we are PANDA STRONG!!! ~ Team Terminus

Congratulations again to Steve, Team Terminus and the South East Region. See you at the CrossFit Games!
